“We are but men!”

Been a little blue lately, but today was better. I managed to spend a few hours at work cleaning and moving furniture about, so it was the best day at work I’ve had in awhile, despite recent suckage. Had lunch with Ai, then came home and went on a lovely bike ride with Curt after dinner. Also started watching The IT Group Crowd, which is silly and enjoyable, though it’s British, so everyone screams too much.

Went to the doctor, and my triglycerides are high. Which was predictable, since I’m pretty overweight right now. Been working out regularly and trying to eat better a little every day – eating less meat, more fruit, more fresh stuff. Now I’m going to get to bed on time. My brain is fried tonight. ;P

Tight ship

This weekend we rode bikes and I overheated. Monday, I stayed home to cool down. Tuesday, I went into work and wish I hadn’t (which is nothing new, but I had to account for Tuesday some way, didn’t I?), and today I candied some walnuts and sprinkled them on a spinach salad, and it was all very yummy.

I bought a new plate at the CVS in an attempt to control my portions. It’s only 8 inches square, as opposed to the 12-inch plates we were using prior to. It also helps that it’s festively polka-dotted. Goes well with my monkey cereal bowl.

The older I get, the more regimented everything is becoming. I have lists of things that I have to take with me every morning, a schedule for my hobbies (well, it’s a theoretical schedule), and menus. It’s comforting, but also damned tiring. Who knew being obsessive could be so taxing?

Curt bought me Sims 3. I then made a Curt. He is an investigative reporter. I had him dig through someone’s trash. Awesome. :)

Glue sticks for 20 cents!

I finish my August article and am faced with the enormity of my work-time boredom. Target is selling glue sticks, 20 cents for two. They are purple and lovely. They almost remind me of those tube lollipops from my youth. Gosh, kids eat a lot of candy. We also buy some wine from BevMo: one bottle of AlbariƱo, two bottles of some Argentinian wine Curt wanted to try. We still know nothing about wine (except, Rieslings are very yummy), but it’s fun to try new things, isn’t it? ;)

The second one, first

Chapter One: A non-tropical heatwave

“Ed, I don’t know if you’ve noticed this, BUT THE AIR CONDITIONING IN THIS RUN-DOWN RAT-TRAP IS BROKEN AND I’M MELTING!

Edward Denby remained unmoving in his chair, his hands laced and resting on his waist. A wet cloth was draped over his face. “If I say I have noticed, will it stop you from complaining?”

“You bet your ass it won’t!”

“So then my motivation for discussing it with you would be…?”

Unceremoniously, the cloth was ripped from his face. His assistant Delphi stood before him, her green eyes flashing a thin sheen of sweat covering her face. She was angry, which was a good look for her. He wisely kept the thought to himself.

I almost bought this sign

We go to the Long Beach antiques fair. I nearly buy a salt shaker in the figure of a cow wearing a fruit on its head, and try to talk Curt into buying a sign of a turn-of-the-century man with a pistol that says, “A tip from the host: hands off my wife!” (Left to my own devices, I would put together the best joke house ever.) It’s very hot out. 800 booths later, we leave with three “vintage” scarves and sore feet. Fun, but probably more so if you’ve got a house to decorate. :)

Arts and vegetables

We go to the farmer’s market today for the first time. It is hot, and I buy three peaches, three zucchinis, baby bok choy, and a giant purple onion.

We then slog through the heat for our little Riverside museum day.

The Riverside Municipal museum has stuffed birds, an orange packer, and a display on the internment of a local Japanese family during the war.

In the Riverside Art Museum, I run across this and can actually feel my life being enriched. I am not an art connoisseur by any means, but as they say, “I know what I like.” And oh yes I do like “The Curious World of Reynaldo and His Twist of Lime Shirt” by R. Mike Nichols. It’s the bird. Curt likes the dogs, but he is wrong, for it’s most certainly the bird. For those who prefer art that doesn’t include dogs and birds, the museum is also currently displaying pieces by some fellow who paints with coffee grinds and glitter.

The UCR Museum of Photography has a very shiny first floor, as can be seen. We see an exhibit of photographs by blind photographers and a camera museum on the first floor, and an exhibit on the effects of Agent Orange on the third floor. The pseudo-tiling on the second floor (which is see-through and creaks) is suspect, thus I am too frightened to venture far into it. So I don’t know what’s on the second floor. Something about expectation. Or construction. Or deconstruction. Or maybe unicorns.

Tomorrow we go to Long Beach for fun antiquing. Happy Sunday. ;)

La semaine derniere

7/11/2009 Yes, but can he moonwalk?

The Vietnamese passage goes okay, my sister forgets her garter and we buy a replacement in a goth store across the street from the restaurant. It is black with a skull-like cameo on it: fitting for the horde. My new brother-in-law performs what is quite possibly the most amazing groom dance EVAR. It’s a great wedding. :) More photos here.

7/12/2009 I can’t has okapi?

(See above!)

Curt, Ai, and I go to the San Diego Wild Animal Park. The heat nearly melts our brains. Ai pokes a lion in the butt, I feed some lorikeets, and have a hyrax sit on my shoulder. We rock out to Def Leppard and REO Speedwagon. More photos here!

7/13/2009 The truth is out there

20090713_2002

We go to the pet store and buy a cat fountain. Curt puts our money where his mouth is and we buy some dog-biscuit cookies and perform a blind taste test. Curt is only able to tell the difference between the dog-biscuit cookies and the generic Stater Brother’s cookies half the time. The lesson here is that Stater Brothers sells dog-biscuit cookie-a-likes. You’ve been warned.

7/15/2009 Harry Potter and the Filler Plot Between #5 and #7

20090715_1882

Ai and I go see Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. I find it lackluster, and Ai is disappointed. Very little sparkle. Hopefully the 7s are better. Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs looks fun, though! I start doing my 10-Minute Trainer. Tony Horton is kicking my ass, but he’s surprisingly likeable.

7/16/2009 Go 66ers!

20090716_1877

Curt and I go see the Inland Empire 66-ers, the Dodger’s A affiliate. Bernie the mascot beast is a poor man’s Philliy’s Phanatic, but it’s a good time. I learn how to keep score at a baseball game.

7/17/2009 So long, farewell

20090717_1990

Clyde goes to his new home and I’m a little sad. I talk Curt into letting me keep Clementine on an outdoor-cat basis. Now only to talk him into letting me keep the other two…

Happy weekend! ;)
